Reviews of historical preservation efforts, new books, and church services helpful to scholars of ecclesiastical history are featured in the September 2026 issue of Anglican & Episcopal History (AEH). Reviews of current scholarship include:

TEXTILES AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Over thirty-five individuals gathered from across Tennessee for the first Sewanee Liturgical Arts Conference held at St. Luke’s Chapel of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. John Runkle reports that attendees learned about ways to preserve church vestments, paraments, and related archival materials. Hands-on sessions were led by textile historian Marianna Garthwaite Klaimain, an associate of the Episcopal order of nuns at the Community of St. John Baptist in Mendham, New Jersey.

Textile historian Garthwaite Klaiman then chronicles a collaboration begun with verger Kyle Sabo to catalogue and preserve textiles at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, beginning in March 2023. Garthwaite Klaimaine writes that, “Unlike museums and historic house collections, churches are living, breathing entities. Their buildings are occupied; their silver is used, and their vestments worn and frontals draped with reverence on altars to set the holy meal of Communion. The age-old tradition in the Episcopal church and many other religions is to preserve historic textiles and embroideries by remounting them onto new fabric.”

CHURCH REVIEWS

Two church reviews provide readers a glimpse of worship services throughout the Anglican Communion.

In this issue, readers learn about ways Sarah Mullally’s installation as 106th Archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral in March 2026 shattered the “stained-glass ceiling.” Church review editor J. Barrington Bates writes that “Archbishop Sarah is the fifth woman to be elected primate of a province of the Anglican Communion, after the Episcopal Church (2006), the Anglican Church of Canada (2019), the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (2022), and the Church in Wales (2025).”

A second church review chronicles three priestly ordinations at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, part of the recently formed Episcopal Diocese of the Great Lakes.
